You’ve always known you could write a book, and now it’s finally happening. You have a manuscript completed, a platform to sell it on and an audience that could very well turn your debut novel into a bestseller.

So why are you afraid?

Could it be that you’re concerned about any mistakes that those readers might catch on? Why not prepare yourself by reading ahead!

Writing Your First Novel – Here’s What You Shouldn’t Do

· Proofreading Your Book Yourself

Being the writer, you won’t be able to spot the mistakes you’ve made, since everything would make sense according to your point of view. Hiring a proofreader, or even asking a friend to read the book for you will help you spot mistakes you didn’t even know were there.

· Not Taking the Publishing Aspect into Account

You will most likely be self-publishing your e-book online. In this case, you’ll have to take care of several things alongside namely the cover design, book marketing, editing, management etc. Self-publishers are responsible for a lot more than just giving their book online. You must cover all your bases otherwise your book might slip through the cracks.

· Write on an Unknown Genre

And by that, we mean unknown to you. Writing is a passion, it’s not a job. You can’t approach it with the same point of view as you would your day job. You must be completely invested in the topic so there’s no error or discrepancy in detail. You don’t want to write about fantasy if all you know about the genre is what you gleaned from Harry Potter.

· Convince Yourself that You Don’t Need an Editor

There’s always room for improvement, even with a masterpiece. An editor that’s independent of your influence – i.e. not your friend or relative – will have an easier time editing your work, and making you understand your mistakes and plot points.

· Not Hire a Professional Book Cover Designer

We always judge a book by its cover, whether we like it or not. Even if you have a creative idea, you’ll still need to hire a professional to make that idea look good. Book covers made on Microsoft Paint (it happens) or Adobe Photoshop by an amateur will not attract the reader, it’ll just make them think that the book is by a novice who doesn’t know what they’re doing.
